Episode 31 — 120.83 Existing Dwelling Unit Load Calculations
What happens when you're working on an existing dwelling and the homeowner wants to add new electrical load?
Maybe it's:
🔥 A hot tub
🚗 EVSE
❄️ Air conditioning
🌡️ Electric heat
🔌 Or another new circuit/load
Do you automatically have to redo the entire service calculation from scratch?
120.83 provides a method for evaluating additional load on certain existing dwelling-unit services and feeders.
This section is used when evaluating an existing 120/240V or 208Y/120V, 3-wire service or feeder for additional load.
The idea is simple:

Instead of treating the entire installation like a brand-new dwelling calculation, 120.83 provides a specific method for evaluating the additional load.
There's an important rule before you start adding everything together.
If the dwelling has both:
❄️ Air-conditioning
and
🔥 Electric space heating
you don't simply count both at full value.
AC OR heating — not both.
The calculation includes several major categories.
Use:
based on the applicable floor area.
Include:
for each required 20A small-appliance circuit and each laundry circuit.
Include the applicable nameplate ratings for loads not already included above, such as:
🔌 Fastened-in-place appliances
🍳 Ranges / ovens / cooktops
👕 Electric dryers
🔥 Water heaters
🚗 EVSE on individual branch circuits
This is where the calculation gets interesting.
The table separates the load into different categories.
The first 8 kVA:
100%
The remainder of the existing load:
40%
80%
80%
50%
Notice something?
gets a lower factor on the portion above 8 kVA.
But certain NEW loads get higher factors.
That's because we're evaluating whether the existing service/feeder has enough capacity to handle what you're adding.

That distinction is critical to this calculation.

The percentages above are the Table 120.83 categories. Don't automatically apply the new-load percentages to existing equipment or vice versa.
Per Table 120.83, what percentage applies to NEW EVSE load being added to an existing dwelling?
A) 40%
B) 50%
C) 80%
D) 100%

New EVSE is assigned an 80% demand factor under Table 120.83.
NEW EVSE → 80%
Don't confuse this with the 100% EVSE treatment under 120.82(D) from Episode 30.
That's an important distinction between these two optional methods.

When you're adding load to an existing dwelling:
Don't immediately think:
“Full service calculation from scratch.”
Instead, ask:
If it does, follow its specific calculation method and Table 120.83.
